Visiting Campus Kristiansund on August 25 2022 - Fish2Fork Week in Molde

Image
Fish2Fork project seeks to promote the development and sharing of competences within the fish sector, at all stages of the process, from production to supply. In this sense, it was sought that the Portuguese researchers had access to a Norwegian technology company focused on aquaculture. The company selected was Flatsetsund, located in Kristiansund, an innovative engineering company that has been working with the main national fishfarms in recent years.      The researchers were received by the company's CEO and former engineer, Lars Georg Backer, who provided a guided tour of the facilities and presented the main projects they were currently developing.  Figure 1 - Visit to Flatsetsund. Lars Georg Backer speaking      Their main concerns were plagues and their combat (and anticipation), thus the disinfestation mechanisms have improved over the years, and the process of its latest product was explained in detail: how the fish is ext...

Visiting fish plants Salmar and Nekton on August 24 2022 - Fish2Fork Week in Molde

Image
The second day of the tour offered a unique opportunity to the project researchers: a visit to two fishfarms – Nekton and Salmar – in order to better understand all the stages of the aquaculture production process.      The Portuguese and Norwegian teams left Molde in the morning of August 24 towards Kristiansund where, due to good weather, they were allowed to use a rib to reach the island of Smøla. The researchers dressed up and embarked on this adventure through the Norwegian Sea, which lasted approximately 30 minutes. Figure 1 - Fish2Fork teams dressing up to use the rib to Smøla Figure 2 - The rib trip to Smøla Figure 3 - The arrival at Netkon facilities      Upon the arrival at the Nekton company, the teams were welcomed by Bruna Skipnes, a brazilian biologist who has been operating in these facilities for many years, and who facilitated a tour in Portuguese for visitors. The visit started at the stage of growth of fish eggs (salmo...

Summer School 2022

Image
The Summer School is open to anyone who might be interested, with no prerequisites. The 2022 edition will still operate in a mixed regime, face-to-face and remote. For those who do not need ECTS, as is the case for professionals, an alternative cost is being studied, depending on the number of applications and the capacity of the rooms.  High school students will also be able to follow classes perfectly and it may also be of interest to them to have the ECTS for when they enter higher education. We already have some applications from high school students, namely for the subject Internet of Things (IoT Systems). - Summer School application deadline is 19/6/2022 - Link to apply For more information follow the link .  Fish2Fork  - Improving skills and competencies for monitoring the fisheries process up to the final customer Website: www.fish2fork.eu  |  Email: info@fish2fork.eu Blogue PT: fish2fork.blogspot.com  |  EN Blog: fish2fork-en.blogspot.com...

MARINE LIVING RESOURCES

Image
The Marine living resources sector encompasses the harvesting of renewable biological resources (primary sector), their conversion into food, feed, bio‐based products and bioenergy (processing) and their distribution along the supply chain. The EU is the sixth largest producer of fishery and aquaculture products (behind China, Indonesia, India, Vietnam and Peru), covering around 3 % of global production. However, overall production has been rather stable in the last decades. The EU has about 57000 active vessels landing about 4 million tonnes of seafood worth €6.3 billion; while the aquaculture sector reached a production of about 1.2 million tonnes worth €4 billion in 2019. The processing and distribution of seafood products are heavily dependent on the supply of raw materials from the primary sector. High consumption and increased demand for seafood products and stagnation in the primary sector make these activities increasingly dependent on imports from third countries. In fact, the...

Illegal fishing

Image
Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing depletes fish stocks, destroys marine habitats, distorts competition, puts honest fishers at disadvantage, and weakens coastal communities, particularly in developing countries.  Source: https://ec.europa.eu/oceans-and-fisheries/fisheries/rules/illegal-fishing_pt Fish2Fork  - Improving skills and competencies for monitoring the fisheries process up to the final customer Website: www.fish2fork.eu  |  Email: info@fish2fork.eu Blogue PT: fish2fork.blogspot.com  |  EN Blog: fish2fork-en.blogspot.com LinkedIn page: www.linkedin.com/company/fish2fork-inov Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Fish2Fork.INOV Instagram: www.instagram.com/fish2fork Twitter: https://twitter.com/Fish2forkI YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYy-Db_Ppn_Hkmbl6xhGETQ

Answers to FAQs - Summer School 2022 (ISCTE-INOV-Molde University College)

Image
Question : When I pre-register on the form I only indicate that I am interested, I do not commit myself to anything, right? Answer : Right. This pre-registration is so that we know what to expect. We divulge it so that those interested can show interest and reserve time in the agenda. When the time comes to create the Summer School and the respective CUs in ISCTE's secretariat informatic system, only the CUs that have enough interested people will be created. At that time, we will send an email to those who signed up for each CU advising that they can now formalize their registration in the ISCTE informatic system. That is why we ask for the email in the form.  The pre-enrolment does not harm in any way. On the contrary. When we know that there are people interested, even if they can't come to this edition of the Summer School, we will let you know when there will be other editions. Question : Do the CUs have a practical component or is it just theory? Answer : All CUs have a s...

Do you know Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14)?

Image
More than 3 billion people rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, and over 80 per cent of world merchandise trade is carried out by sea. Oceans contribute to poverty eradication, sustained economic growth and food security. However, the benefits they provide are increasingly undermined by human activities. Rising CO 2 emissions are driving ocean warming, cidification and deoxygenation, which threaten marine ecosystems and the people who depend on them, and are overwhelming the capacity of oceans to moderate climate change. Overfishing depletes fish stocks, a third of which are already overexploited. Land-based pollutants, including plastic pollution and nutrient and sewage runoff, adversely affect coastal habitats and communities. These changes have long-term repercussions that require urgent scaling up of protection of marine environments, investment in ocean science, and support for small-scale fishing communities and the sustainable management of the oceans. The sustainabilit...
